Youth Services Awards honors students during National Volunteer Week

On April 28, 2008, United Way of Medina County, Medina Sunrise Rotary, Medina Evening Rotary and Feckley Charitable Foundation joined together to honor 55 high school juniors and seniors for their exceptional commitment to community service in Medina County during National Volunteer Week April 27th-May 3rd.  The 55 students received thunderous applause as their parents and school administrators congratulated them on 23,151 total volunteer hours of their time, talents, and energy during the 2007-2008 school year.

Students from Black River, Brunswick, Buckeye, Cloverleaf, Highland, Medina County Career Center, Medina, and Wadsworth High Schools also received commendations from the Medina County Commissioners, , State Senator Ron Amstutz, U.S. Senator Sherod Brown and U.S. Representative Betty Sutton for their volunteer contributions to the community.

Keynote speaker, Kelly Schmotzer, Chairperson of Youth Services of American Red Cross—Medina Chapter, addressed the students about living their lives at a high level and continuing to be leaders in their schools and communities.

Four students were selected as recipients of $1,250 scholarships sponsored by Medina Evening Rotary and three students were selected as recipients of a $1,500 scholarship sponsored by Medina Sunrise Rotary based on their volunteer involvement both inside and outside of the classroom, as well as educational goals and career aspirations.  The scholarship winners are: Brianna DenBoer of Medina, Ashley Weir of Cloverleaf, Heidi Santelmann of Cloverleaf, Rachel Sniff of Highland, Megan Christy of Medina, Krista Kano of Medina, and Megan Smith  of Highland.
