With rising gasoline prices, many beloved readers will be staying closer to home this summer. As you search for value for your tourist entertainment, there is a place on the north shore that you might finally find time to visit—the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame & Museum.

The Rock Hall contains exhibits highlighting portions of the rock ‘n roll timeline that include artifacts, photos, video and interactive kiosks. The museum starts at the very beginning, paying homage to the earliest influences of rock’s roots. The music scenes in various historical ground zero locations are given their due, like Memphis, Detroit, San Francisco, New York, London, and Seattle. Ohio’s musical heritage is also well represented. There are also extensive displays covering rock’s heavyweights including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, and Jimi Hendrix.

I’ll visit the Rock Hall just to see the special temporary collections that display many items loaned to the museum by the artist or family members. Previous exhibits covered the likes of Bob Dylan, U2, The Clash, The Who, and John Lennon.

Some of the current temporary displays include:

  • Take Me Out: Baseball Rocks!, celebrating baseball as a pop-culture phenomenon through displays of sheet music, records, and film.
  • 2008 Inductee Exhibit highlights new honorees Leonard Cohen, The Dave Clark Five, Madonna, John Mellencamp and The Ventures.
  • HELP! Behind the Scenes of the Beatles' Movie pays homage to the Beatles’ impact on our culture, commemorating the group’s classic 1965 movie.
  • The Doors honors the band’s 40th anniversary of enduring albums and singles.
  • Rick Nelson pays tribute to this early pop idol’s untimely death 20 years ago.
The Rock ‘n Roll HOF is open 10-5:30 daily and they won’t kick you out until 9 p.m. on Wednesday and Saturday through Labor Day. If you reside with a zip code beginning 440, 441, 442 or 443, you’ll receive an adult ticket for $18. Kids 9-12 are $13 and little rockers 8 and under get in free with purchase of adult admission.
