In 1982, when respected psychologist Dr. Jane Lehr Eckert was working at St. Thomas Hospital, she played a key role in the lives of individuals who were battling addiction. “I became fascinated with the process of letting go of a certain behavior and having the ability to embrace a new one,” she describes. “There certainly is a spiritual component to it, but what intrigued me most was that some people were able to overcome their addictions while others were not.”

What started as an avenue of intrigue for Dr. Eckert, soon led her to the idea that our energy plays a major role in determining our success or failure in a number of areas in life. After 25 years as a clinical psychologist, she recently opened Studio e—within her Fairlawn practice—to help people interested in changing their lives.

“This is really a passion of mine that I wanted to share with other people,” she offers with her trademark warmth.

“Energy is one of the most overused words in the healing arts today,” she laments. “But when you think about it, we’re made up of 75-trillion cells and all of them are like miniature batteries. They have a positive charge inside and a negative charge outside—this creates an energy field. So your thoughts and feelings are all fueled by energy and are a part of this field..”
It might seem complicated, but it isn’t.

Dr. Eckert believes that by harnessing our own energy and controlling its hold on our lives, we can achieve many things—like overcoming addictions, quitting smoking, losing weight, reducing stress and much more.
“There is scientific evidence that energy techniques have helped soldiers returning from war overcome post-traumatic stress disorder,” she comments. “In fact, the U.S. Olympic team had a group of energy practitioners tending to them in Beijing.”

Energy medicine is similar to acupuncture, but is painless and something you can do yourself. “It’s really a compliment to psychotherapy and is also a complete system of self help,” she says.
Instead of little needles, two fingers are tapped on specific places on the body—called meridians—to balance the energy system. “It’s very easy to learn and apply,” assures Dr. Eckert, who has been studying the science for the past 10 years.

Meridians are found in the main column that runs along the length of your body, with pathways that extend out from it. These act like miniature riverbeds carrying energy throughout the body to the organs. The tapping and breathing techniques taught at Studio e are a means of strengthening and balancing these meridians.
Mounting research suggests that many common disorders and symptoms may be, in part, reflections of energy imbalances. Thoughts are considered “things” and by controlling them with the techniques learned at Studio e, a person can achieve reduced stress, a boost in energy, increased vitality and a strengthened immune system. “We basically teach you how to disrupt a dysfunctional field,” she says. “Then you can access positive and enriching thoughts and behaviors.”

“Many students are doing other things to enhance their lives like yoga and Reiki. This is something to augment your overall wellness plan,” Dr. Eckert emphasizes.

Studio e also offers classes for those interested in exploring things like Mindfulness—learning to pay attention to what’s happening in your life at the moment; Chakra Clearing for Couples—releasing the blocks to your energy system; and Living Radiantly—techniques to jump start your circuit of bliss, along with an array of workshops and classes that cover a variety of other wellness topics.

“Human beings are a perfect design,” beams Dr. Eckert. “Tapping into healing isn’t always about the external. Your connection to your personal spirituality is the foundation for your life force. This is the next wave in health and healing.”
