The eye-catching Stauffer’s Home Furnishings billboard on Route 18 hints at the spectacular array of American-made furnishings housed within the Stauffer family’s historic Sharon Center store.

If you’ve driven down Route 18 any time over the past few years, you’ve no doubt seen Stauffer’s Home Furnishings’ enormous signature billboard, featuring an assortment of glamorous table legs and the words “Nice Legs!” cleverly emblazoned across the top. Like the furnishings sold at the Stauffer family’s landmark Sharon Center store, just a 10-minute drive from both Fairlawn and Medina, it’s become quite a conversation piece.

“We’ve had people tell us they use the billboard as a marker for giving directions,” smiles David Stauffer, whose great grandfather launched the business in 1914 under the moniker Stauffer’s Country Store.

Stauffer’s originally sold everything from hammers to small appliances. Furniture, David says, was just a small part of the business. But as customer demand grew for the quality furnishings found within the shop, so did the square footage dedicated to featuring them.

For the past 20 years Stauffer’s has exclusively focused on what it does best: selling high quality furniture sourced from manufacturers scattered across the U.S. And unique tables with gorgeous gams are just a portion of what you’ll find when you visit.

“Our customers appreciate that we deal almost exclusively in furniture from companies located within the United States,” David proudly shares. “It’s a dedication to quality not many retailers embrace. We’ve found that domestic brands provide everything our clients are looking for when it comes to style, and everything they expect when it comes to finding pieces that will stand the test of time.”

One of the most notable brands featured in the store, Smith Brothers, is manufactured in Indiana. “Pieces from this line boast traditional Midwest style,” David says. “We carry an enormous variety. You could spend more, but I don’t think you’re going to get a better piece of furniture.”

Like most furniture companies, Smith Brothers has responded to a demand in the marketplace by creating pieces that display modern flair with less of an emphasis on country. The Stauffer family also recognized the need for change.

“Up until five years ago we were known as Stauffer’s Country Store. We changed the name and our logo to better reflect the brands we represent,” he continues. “If you haven’t visited us in a while, you’ll be delighted by the variety we feature. Our emphasis is on traditional pieces, but we’ve also brought in more contemporary lines, like Ekornes, a Norwegian line of quality furnishings with a cleaner look that includes Stressless, their high quality leather recliners.”

Marshfield Furniture, from Wisconsin, is one of the newest product lines on the showroom floor. “This line boasts 11 styles of sofas, all priced at under $950,” David reveals. “The quality features rival the priciest sofas, with solid hardwood frames, drop-in coil units, and lifetime guarantees on both. There is also an outstanding selection of fabrics available, with more than 150 choices to pick from in that price range.”

“Nobody else in the Cleveland area carries this line,” he continues. “These pieces represent a rare opportunity to purchase superior quality for hundreds less than comparable brands.”

Also new is the Lafayette Interior Fashions line of custom window treatments and blinds. Made in Indiana, this product assortment is typically only available through a professional interior designer. But because Stauffer’s has an in-house design staff available to consult with its customers, you’ll enjoy premium custom window treatments without the added expense of a designer’s fee.

“We don’t charge customers who make a purchase from us for our design services,” David reveals. “We’ll come to your house, measure for your blinds or fabric treatments, and then install them as part of our service.

We’ll also help you pull your entire look together by coordinating your furniture pieces with your window coverings. We offer the opportunity to customize for a lot less than you’ll pay elsewhere.”

Capel Rugs, also an American company, includes thousands of different styles of wool rugs in its catalog of inventory, which may be ordered in exactly the size needed to fit your space. A number of sumptuous options are also represented on Stauffer’s 13,000 square foot retail floor.

Mobel, from Indiana, boasts seven distinct groupings of exquisite bedroom furniture options, all with dovetail construction and wood-on-wood glides. Finish choices create the opportunity for customization.

But here’s a little something the mass furniture merchants appearing in the Sunday ads don’t want you to know. While they’re busy filling their warehouses with bedroom suites that must be purchased in predetermined groupings to qualify for “savings,” Stauffer’s sells its bedroom furniture by the piece. Select any combination of five pieces and they’ll extend a discount on your order.

In the lower level of the store, the locally produced Sealy and U.S. made Tempur-Pedic lines of mattresses are on display. On the upper and main levels, unique accessories in a variety of styles and an intriguing selection of occasional tables—all with nice legs—round out the family’s wares. David says that if you see a table you like you should grab it. Because he orders just one or two of any given style, once they’re gone you likely won’t see them in the store again.
