Spoplight is on local talent

It’s time to shine the spotlight once again on local musical artists that may be on the brink of creating a national buzz. Already touring cross-country, The Magpies could be the next great thing to come out of Northeast Ohio.
Formally known as Roger Hoover & The Whiskeyhounds, the band decided to change their name with the release of last year’s Eastern Standard Time. A true indie band with no label or professional representation, the band is led by Barberton native singer/songwriter Roger Hoover on vocals, guitar, and banjo. Cleveland’s Justin Gorski plays the electric piano, organ, and accordion along with harmonizing vocals.

The rhythm section is handled by brother duo and Mansfield natives Dave & Doug McKean—on drums and bass guitar, respectfully.  Hear the band come together on tracks like, “The Waiting,” the country waltz, “The Girl on the Hill,” or the soft, riveting “Inamorato” by sampling some of their music at www.myspace.com/magpiesrock.
Well known for their rockin’ live performances, the boys are making a few local appearances on April 24 at Hone’s Corner Café in Barberton, May 1 at the Water Street Tavern in Kent, and May 15 at The Brother’s Lounge on Cleveland’s west side.  The Magpies will also be performing April 25 at the “Find Your Voice” benefit to support the Domestic Violence Center of Greater Cleveland at St Helena’s Hall (1367 West 65th St). The event ticket includes food by several area restaurants, and beverages by local watering holes. An array of fabulous raffle and silent auction items will also enhance the evening. Save 10 bucks by ordering your tickets in advance at www.domesticviolencecenter.org.

As for the rest of our heroes, Dan Auerbach, from The Black Keys, has been getting a lotta love for his solo release Keep It Hid; Jessica Lea Mayfield is opening for Ray LaMontange’s tour, which just visited Playhouse’s State Theatre; Ryan Humbert returned on the heels of his Nashville crafted CD Old Souls New Shoes; and Zach will be debuting his album What I Meant To Say on April 25 at the Cuyahoga Falls High School auditorium.
