Whether it’s fully enjoying the sights and sounds of the changing seasons, ensuring safe driving or being more productive at work – seeing the world accurately has a deep impact on the quality of our lives. Dr. John Porter, founder of Premier Eye Care in North Royalton wants to ensure that everyone can see the important things in their lives clearly. The eyes are the most complex organs you possess (other than the brain) with more than 2 million working parts. They will process more than 24 million images in your lifetime, contributing to up to 85% of your knowledge base.
“It’s all right if you haven’t been to see an optometrist in a while,” assures Dr. John Porter “We’re not here to judge. We just want to see you get an early handle on what’s happening with your eyes. According to the Vision Council of America, more than 11.5 million American adults have uncorrected vision problems and that is unacceptable,” he emphasizes. Millions more have undetected ocular health problems such as glaucoma and diabetic eye disease which have no early symptoms.
“Uncorrected vision problems can be very costly and those costs can far outweigh the expense of an examination. Poor vision affects every aspect of your life. Many of us spend considerable time staring at a computer screen, watching television, doing mounds of paperwork, working with small tools and driving long distances—all of which can cause tremendous eye strain. The result is eye fatigue, vision-related headaches and other symptoms. Checking your vision and upgrading or adding corrective eyewear will reduce these problems,” explains Dr. Porter.
If you haven’t seen the optometrist lately, the first thing you’ll notice during Dr. Porter’s exam is that the process has dramatically changed. Gone are the days of simply looking through ground glass lenses while the doctor asks, “Which is better?” Premier Eye Care is a state-of-the-art family eye care center so advanced you likely won’t recognize much of his leading edge equipment, like the remarkable 3D Wave, which delivers a full analysis of your vision in just four seconds.
“Instead of simply telling you that your eyes have changed, we can tell you why they’ve changed,” Dr. Porter assures. “Patient education is very important to us.” Dr. Porter regularly finishes his exams by discussing his findings with the patient and then presenting all of the options available for correcting any problems.
Another benefit of getting a visual exam now, says Dr. Porter, is that other health issues like diabetes and cardiovascular disease can be detected in their earliest stages. “It’s an opportunity to be pro-active about one of the most important aspects of your life...your health,” he invites.
Nothing gives away your age or hinders your eye health quite like readers perched on the edge of your nose.
“You may think you see better with a pair of drug store readers, but do you really know if you’ve addressed a vision correction issue?” Dr. Porter inquires. A majority of people needing vision correction have a different prescription in each eye and some level of astigmatism. Neither of these issues is addressed by over-the-counter readers.
If you are still wearing prescription glasses from several years ago, you might also be surprised by how thin and light-weight the newest and most technologically-advanced eyewear can be. “Modern lenses allow for the clearest, sharpest vision possible,” he assures. “Plus, we carry more than 500 different frame options right in our office including the top designer options. Our staff is extremely knowledgeable about all the choices and how to fit each individual for the best results.”
Because Premier is a family practice, Dr. Porter regularly sees patients of all ages. The American Optometric Association recommends initial eye exams by the age of 3. And nearly 1 in 5 children have eye conditions which affect learning. “In addition to treating children, I have a special interest in treating elderly patients with vision problems,” he provides. In fact, Dr. Porter and an associate doctor provided eye exam services for nearly 50 nursing homes in the area for his other practice, ElderCare Vision Services.
If you are fortunate enough to have vision insurance, Dr. Porter and his staff are insurance experts and can explain everything to help maximize your benefits. And since almost two-thirds of the population doesn’t have insurance coverage, Premier Eye Care is also offering a valuable discount that can be found in the sidebar accompanying this story. “We’re making it possible for anyone who wants to take the opportunity to find out exactly where they stand with their vision to do so while enjoying a tremendous savings,” he emphasizes.
