Working out is easy. Staying motivated for more than one or two trips to the gym? Much harder!
This January will be a hot time for area fitness facilities because New Year’s resolutions tend to revolve around weight loss and “finally getting into shape.” Come February though, the gyms are not as crowded and a lot of people are out big money for a once great-sounding yearlong membership.
There are a number of choices in the area to get and stay fit, like structured 15-minute circuit training programs, Pilates, yoga, sports clubs and body-building gyms. But none of them can change the size or shape of your body—if you never go. Whether you’re intimidated by complex equipment or just not sure what the right program is for you, the key to success is finding the right people to help you reach your goals.
RPFitness is one of the newest fitness facilities in Akron, completely remodeled and renovated after the previous tenant, Bally Total Fitness, left the building.
This club has the latest equipment and fitness classes and is so clean you could eat off the floor. Unfortunately, none of that matters unless you initiate a visit to the club and form a routine you not only can live with, but really enjoy. And RPFitness may be the only club in the area to offer a program completely designed around keeping new and current members motivated and inspired. It’s clear that this staff doesn’t just want you to join their club—they want you to be as excited about it as they are.
When you join RPFitness, a staff member schedules your first introductory appointment in a series of five in the innovative “Face2Face” program. A certified trainer tests and documents your blood pressure, resting heart rate, and body measurements and conducts some simple flexibility tests. Everyone schedules their next appointment before they leave, encouraging people to purposefully schedule their routine, instead of squeezing it in if they have time.
During the second visit, a personal trainer provides you with a completely customized workout plan and takes you through the workout, assisting with proper form and technique. Each person receives a pocket-sized chart to document every session in detail. Between the second and third steps, you’re encouraged to practice the prescribed routine and work on becoming more familiar with the equipment and the facility. You get to know all of the personal trainers and immediately have a full, experienced staff at your fingertips to answer your questions.
“My goal was to get active and hopefully start to feel better after being mostly inactive for about a year,” remarks RPFitness member Dominik Irrcher. “Motivation was key for me and I like the structure of the strength program the trainers gave me. At first I felt a little depressed, seeing how out of shape I was in just a year, but I started getting stronger and had more energy during the day and I fit it all in during my lunch.”
The healthy eating meeting is a wake-up call for many people. The trainer provides helpful tips to incorporate healthy eating into real life. “I wasn’t a big water-drinker, but my trainer, Kim suggested I try carrying a water bottle with me and drink it throughout the day,” Dominik adds. “Now I pay attention to portions and don’t eat out as often as I use to.” At his 30-day review, Dominik was happy that his workout had increased in intensity and he had a variety of workouts to choose from. “I sleep better, feel more confident about my body and feel like I have formed an exercise habit I can stick to,” he says.
But the Face2Face program doesn’t end there.
“After 30 days, we do a final review with each participant and even hold a graduation,” smiles Ellen Botnick, owner of RPFitness. “I’ve always prided myself and our staff in getting to know our members, so they feel comfortable and we can help keep them on track.”
Paul Howel was only 24 when he realized his sedentary lifestyle was getting him into trouble. At his follow-up appointment, Paul reported (with an ear-to-ear smile) that he’d lost 30 pounds and 25 total inches and was more confident than he had ever been. “I’ve learned so much about what foods are okay to eat and those I should avoid,” he explains. “I love coming here at least four days a week. I feel great and I really like all the people.”

“I feel excited about coming to the gym and I never thought that would happen,” says member Patricia Sewell. “After 30 days I lost 8 pounds and 5 inches and my co-workers keep telling me how great I look. I’m so much more confident.”
