Thanks inquiring Mimi readers. I’m back from taking a holiday in San Francisco. The highlights included a shopping trip to Amoeba Music, a former bowling alley turned record store located in Haight-Ashbury. I was finally able to find a copy of Seattle’s Fleet Foxes latest self-titled release. The band grew up listening to their parent’s CSN&Y records and incorporated the harmonizing style to its sound. Try sampling the tracks “Your Protector” and “Quiet Houses.” The album has a similar feel to My Morning Jacket, but if you have not heard MMJ’s Evil Urges, I recommend you start there.

In a year that has been bursting with exceptional releases, vocalist Jim James and company crafted one heck of a follow-up album to their critically acclaimed Z. I have a feeling you’ll be singing “I’m Amazed” the more you listen to the entire disc.

Another highlight of my Bay Area travels was taking in a show at Bottom Of The Hill, but you don’t have to travel that far to see some top flight shows. The Beachland Ballroom brings Dar Williams to the ballroom on the 16th, while Jessica Lea Mayfield will be playing in the tavern and celebrating her CD release. You can hear Dana Fuchs, who was in the film Across The Universe on the 19th, and the lovely voice of Neko Case returns on the 23rd. Ryan Adams & The Cardinals close out the month performing at the beautiful Palace Theatre on the 30th.

You can relive the glory days of WMMS during a special event at Borders Books & Music in Fairlawn (3737 W. Market Street) on Saturday, September 13th   from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Headlining this Rock ‘n Roll Carnival is former program director John Gorman who will be signing copies of his memoir recounting the radio station’s heyday from 1973 through 1986. Other notable attendees include the man known for his signature Friday after work Get Down, Murray Saul, buzzard artist David Helton, t-shirt entrepreneur Daffy Dan, former DJ and fellow author Mike Olszewski, former Michael Stanley Band member Jonah Koslen, Cleveland Scene writer D.X. Ferris, musician/author/columnist David Giffels and more special guests. The day of sharing, signings, and memories is being co-sponsored by public radio station 91.3 The Summit. The WMMS event will also take place Saturday, September 20 at Borders Books & Music of Strongsville.
