Mind, Body, Spirit

Darcy Providente and Robin Peavy (centered, kneeling) have incorporated the latest Yoga craze—Hot Hot 26—into the class offerings at their new Chagrin Yoga.

At their new Chagrin Yoga, owners Darcy Providente and Robin Peavy have taken the traditional Yoga studio concept to a new level by incorporating a green boutique, massage, and reflexology to help clients achieve a healthier balance.

Darcy Providente isn’t sure what compelled her to visit a Yoga class five years ago, but the experience changed her life.
“I went to that Yoga class and absolutely fell in love with it,” says Darcy, a fitness instructor for more than 20 years. “So I started incorporating Yoga into my private clients’ fitness routines and they began saying, ‘You should open a studio.’”
Among them was Robin Peavy, a design-conscious clothing retailer with a sharp business mind. Teacher and student pooled their expertise to open Chagrin Yoga, an eco-friendly, full-service Yoga studio and boutique that offers therapeutic massage with Bobby Billingsley, reflexology with Mary Landies, and organic spray tanning with Jill Lancry.
Opened in mid-November, the 2,900 square foot space includes two heated Yoga studios with Amtico flooring. The Bamboo Room’s soothing sage walls feature subtle bamboo murals. Next door, a root chakra and recycled cork light fixtures decorate the Root Room and a heating bag on the ceiling provides optimal humidity for supporting flexibility and minimizing injury.
A range of Yoga classes—such as Power Vinyasa, Bikram-like Hot Hot 26, Gentle Yoga and Kids’ Yoga—are led by 17 teachers, including local notables Christie Calvin, Bryan Paquette, Dawn Holst, Deanna Lee, David Kampinski, Jennette Zimmerman, Colleen Lanzaretta, Erin Pickus, Maribeth Will, Meg Witt, Terry Coghlan, Kathy Hammonds, Melanie Tessmer, Jim Lloyd, Ricki Miller and Shakthi Paramasivam.
“Yoga is for everyone,” Darcy says.
Practicing Yoga can begin early. At Chagrin Yoga, children’s classes are just $5, teen classes are just $12, and are often timed to coincide with adult classes.
And, Darcy insists, because Yoga is an individual practice, it doesn’t matter what body type or size you are when you get started. It’s all about moving into the poses at your own pace and Chagrin Yoga features a variety of classes to accommodate.
“The physical and mental benefits are amazing,” Darcy says. “People come to Yoga initially for a great workout and a toned body, but they quickly become more aware of their bodies and minds. We tell people not to wait until they’re in a good mood. Come in when you feel like you’re ready to explode or implode; we’ll help you decompress.”
Hot Hot 26, for example, unites the mind and body by working muscles, tendons, joints, organs, tissues and cells in a heated room that promotes detoxification and flexibility. Power Flow Vinyasa combines Yoga movements with breathing, focus and meditation to attain peace, calm and joy.
Darcy and Robin offer first-time visitors a free class or a week’s worth of unlimited classes for just $25.
Among the boutique’s green items are hand-made Margarita apparel from Israel and soy-based candles crafted by a breast cancer survivor. Chagrin Yoga will soon be the first local retailer with street front space to offer lululemon, an internationally renowned fitness gear line for which Darcy serves as Northeast Ohio’s “ambassador.”
“We want to teach people to love Yoga,” says Robin, who designed the studios and boutique with recycled and sustainable items, such as coat hooks made from railroad spikes and a meeting table fashioned from reclaimed barn wood.
The women are succeeding. More than 300 people have registered for classes.
“It’s been amazing,” Darcy says. “We all need to connect to ourselves and get the energy moving. Tears come to my eyes when I think about the love and energy we’ve received from the community.”
