Dating back to 1876, the Henry Holmes House is one of the most charming residences on Aurora Street.

Originally owned by the English carriage maker and his family, the house has since seen its share of visiting families come and go. In 1954 it became one of the area’s first boarding houses, and in 1990 transitioned to a bed and breakfast bearing the name Hudson’s Historic Inn.

“We like to think that this house continues to carry on the tradition of welcoming visitors to Hudson,” says current owner Denise Mamula.

Although the house had been functioning as a bed and breakfast, when Denise purchased the property in May of 2007 she felt it needed a special touch and began painstakingly refurbishing the existing three guest rooms, then added a fourth—the Garden Suite—in the carriage house out back.

The results of her efforts are evident in every breathtaking corner. Denise has cleverly mixed the historic and the modern to produce an eclectic blend that’s as relaxing and inviting as it is beautiful.

Already Denise has welcomed guests from all parts of the globe and regularly hosts extended-stay travelers visiting family in Hudson from far away places. “Most of my guests want all of the comforts of home without feeling as though they’re imposing on the person they’re visiting,” she explains. “I have a mom who visits her family in Hudson for the summer but stays with us because of the amenities we offer.”

Among other conveniences, she is referring to the well-appointed, centrally located kitchen and complimentary laundry facilities. Guests are free to use both during their stay, although a scrumptious continental breakfast is freshly prepared each morning. And Denise is happy to serve as concierge by securing dinner reservations at any local hotspot.

“We’re within walking distance of First & Main, which makes a leisurely trip out for lunch or dinner and shopping a great way to spend the day,” she invites. “Many of our corporate clients enjoy staying with us for this reason alone.”

But out of town guests aren’t the only ones enjoying all that the inn has to offer. “We’re the perfect place for newlyweds,” she smiles. “Even if you’re planning to leave for a honeymoon, why not spend your wedding night with us? It’s wonderfully romantic here.” If your trip down the aisle is a more distant memory, the inn is also an ideal spot to celebrate an anniversary without having to travel. And it can be fun to re-discover the
area you live in while re-discovering all of the reasons you fell in love.

Breakfast at Hudson’s Historic Inn is no small affair. All overnight guests enjoy choices that typically include items like fruit parfaits, fresh-baked breads, muffins, quiche, scones and a breakfast casserole and beverages. Guest accommodations are available year-round.

One of the newest additions to the inn are the monthly themed teas. With space available for just 30 guests, securing a spot at the event has become a must-do for local historians and tea drinkers alike.

Denise has scheduled four limited seatings for her May Mother’s Day Tea, which will be held on Thursday, May 7, and Friday, May 8, at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. each day. The $25 cost includes three or four different tea sandwiches, scones with Devonshire cream, four different sweets, two teas to drink (one herbal and one black), a fresh garden salad, and tax and tip. Reservations are an absolute must.

Denise has christened her new tearoom the “Cassidy Rose Tea Room” in honor of her daughter who helps out during the teas. Her twelve-year-old son, Conner, makes sure to taste-test all of the delicious creations served during tea to ensure they’re up to his standards. Marcia Wilson serves as the tearoom’s hospitality manager and helps ensure that every guest leaves delighted. The tearoom is also available for showers and birthday teas with a minimum of just 12 guests. Children’s birthday teas have been a big hit, Denise says, and include tasty treats specifically geared toward pint-sized appetites. Parties are available to kids aged six and up and refreshments include favorites like peanut butter and jelly and cream cheese tea sandwiches, chocolate-dipped strawberries, children’s tea, and pink lemonade. Menus can be customized depending u the event.

Also new is the “Ladies Night Inn.” It’s an opportunity for an overnight spa getaway close to home. The menu of spa services includes manicures, pedicures, massages and facials, and the luxurious Galvanic Spa treatment featuring Nu Skin anti-aging products. These treatment gels can produce younger looking skin in about 10 minutes, rejuvenate your complexion, revitalize your scalp, and refine your body. There is an eight-guest maximum.

“I wanted to create an opportunity for busy moms and working women to indulge in spa services, complete with overnight accommodations and breakfast in the morning, without having to travel out of town,” Denise says.

Now that’s hospitality.
