Westlake’s new Brookway Hearing Center is reconnecting its clients with the world around them.

When you call Brookway Hearing Center’s office in Strongsville, the other end of the line is likely to be occupied by Robert Pavlik Sr. or Joyce Pavlik, the parents of Robert Jr., who co-owns the company with his wife, Michelle. It’s all about family at Brookway, and Robert Jr. promises to maintain the same atmosphere at the company’s new location in Westlake.

“We want people to feel like they’re a part of the family when they visit,” Robert says.

Tony Pasadyn, manager of the Westlake center, fits right in, Robert says.

“Tony is a perfect match with our philosophy of customer service,” he explains. “He has a lot of experience and reflects the same moral and ethical standards that we do. It’s a perfect fit.”

And, being board certified in the hearing instrument sciences, Robert knows a little about perfect fits.

Tony, a 10-year Westlake resident, previously worked with Robert at another hearing center and says they have often talked about teaming up again. Brookway’s customer-first policy is music to his ears.

“Nobody rolls out of bed in the morning saying, ‘I want to see the hearing aid guy today,’” Tony admits. “We understand that, so we want to make the customer feel comfortable and informed. A lot of hearing centers sell first and ask questions later. I am not a sales guy. I give the patients as much information as I can and let them make an informed choice.”

Realizing the frustration that hearing loss already causes, Brookway intentionally spreads out its appointments to give each patient plenty of time for personalized care.

“In a lot of places you’re like a number, waiting to get in, then getting shuffled in and out,” Robert laments. “We keep the wait to a minimum, then take plenty of time to do proper testing and adjustments of a hearing aid. It’s kind of like sitting down and talking with a neighbor over a beer. Except without the beer.”

Proper adjustment is important, he says. Unlike the putty-like amplifiers of a generation ago, many of today’s hearing aids are high-tech digital devices that can be specially programmed to meet not only the needs, but also the wants, of the wearer.

“Not only is everybody’s hearing ability different, but so is the way they want to hear,” Robert explains. “While driving, for example, one person wants to hear the noise of the road. Another driver doesn’t. Today’s hearing aids can be set according to that preference. Many of today’s hearing aids are so technologically advanced that they can be digitally programmed to accentuate specific sound frequencies—like a spouse’s voice. It’s like wearing a graphic equalizer in your ear.”

By carrying hearing aids from 12 different manufacturers, like Unitron, Brookway ensures that they have the perfect product for each person—and for every budget.

“Most places handle one or two manufacturers,” Robert says. “By offering more choices we give our patients more bang for their buck. Of course we offer a no-cost lifetime service warranty for all hearing aids we sell.”

Tony says today’s hearing aids are not only technological iPods compared to a yesterday’s victrolas, but they look pretty good, too. In contrast to the devices of 20 years ago, today’s hearing aids are stylish, or even hidden behind, or inside, the ear.

“The appearance—or invisibility—of today’s hearing aids helps to remove one objection to getting one,” Robert says. “But even more important in today’s devices is their functionality. During the last couple of years, the biggest advances have been in noise reduction and feedback reduction.”
