Griffin House live at Musica
By: Jay MinkinDate: 02/27/2008
When I’m listening to the radio and hear a song that catches my attention, I look to see who the artist is. The second time it happens, I write down the name of the artist and song. When I hear a different song and notice that it’s by the same artist who grabbed my ear, I head over to the music store and buy the album.
A songwriter named Griffin House is the first to intrigue me with his 2008 release titled Flying Upside Down.
Unfortunately for us audiophiles, the album is only available as a download until April 15th. But your Mimi exclusive street beat is announcing that the new CD will be available for purchase at Griffin House’s live performance in Akron on March 4th.
Griffin House grew up in Springfield, Ohio and graduated from Miami of Ohio in 2002 with a degree in English Literature and Writing. His thoughts were to enroll in graduate school, but his poetry professor gave him the inspiration to channel his creativity toward being a songwriter rather than following in his footsteps.
The passion and determination in House’s songs are filled with personal, richly detailed snapshots of his life. They quickly won him a devoted following and a record deal for his first album, 2004’s Lost & Found. Though the album received critical acclaim, House was only able to release additional compositions on iTunes.
With the recording of his second major release Flying Upside Down, House continues to follow the path of his dreams. Part of that dream was recording with an all-star team of musicians, which included bass player Benmont Tench and Mike Campbell (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers), Justin Mendal-Johnson (Beck), and Sara Watkins (Nickel Creek).
Griffin House will be performing at Musica along with the band Sons of William, who will back House along with playing an opening set. Musica is located in downtown Akron and sits back on East Market Street between High and Main. Free parking is available in the Public Library deck across from the Akron Art Museum after 6 pm. And don’t forget to bring your Sharpie to have your new CD autographed ;-)
