“We named our restaurant for the Danube because it connects many different people,” explains Arpad, who moved from Romania to the United States with Erika in 1987—two years before the end of communism in their home nation. “The Danube flows through capital cities like Budapest, Vienna, and Belgrade. Where we were born we share many things with the Hungarians and the Germans and the people of other nationalities who learned from one another, and it shows in the unique food we grew up with.”

The recipes prepared by the grandmothers and mothers of Arpad and Erica have been passed down, reviving a lost art through the lunches and dinners that are now made from scratch daily in the Blue Danube’s kitchen.
